An English delftware Adam and Eve charger, circa 1675-90 Probably Brislington, painted in tones of blue and yellow with Adam and Eve either side of a fruiting tree, a leaf held in their right hands protecting their modesty, concentric blue lines at the rim, with a lead-glazed back, 33.7cm diam Footnotes: Provenance Graham Slater Collection The composition unusually lacks the snake, which is often found coiled in the bough of the tree. The decoration is generally quite unusual but various elements point to a Brislington attribution. The shading of Adam and Eve's rather globular musculature, and their position, walking to their left, with Eve looking back at Adam over her shoulder. The leaves held in each of the figures' right hand is also found on a charger illustrated by Michael Archer, Delftware in The Fitzwilliam (2013), A.26. Archer also comments on the Brislington feature whereby the nose and one eyebrow are drawn in a continuous line. This can also be seen on Brislington portrait chargers, such as the examples depicting Queen Catherine of Braganza and another with her brother-in-law King James II illustrated at A.4 and A.5.
