Michael Ayrton (British, 1921-1975) Pour Rita from Femmes/Hombres Etching, 1971, on Japon paper, especial first state of VII of Verlaine Set, signed and dated verso in pencil, with further annotations to the margins, framed Plate 197 x 367mm (7 3/4 x 14 1/2in) Footnotes: Provenance With Abbot & Holder, London. With Michael Parkin Gallery, London. Pour Rita is one of fifteen etched illustrations produced by Ayrton for an edition of Verlaine's erotic poems, Femmes/Hombres, produced privately by his friend and colleague Douglas Clevedon of Clover Hill Press and published in 1972. These images were also issued as separate etchings, but rarely exhibited due to the controversial subject matter. Two, however, of which Pour Rita was one, were considered 'milder' than the rest and were exhibited more often - something that Ayrton himself found an ironic misreading of the works. This particular example likely came from one of 13 copies of the 'deluxe' edition, one of the signed proofs on Japon paper. We are grateful to Justine Hopkins for compiling this catalogue entry.
