Three serving bottles or decanters, circa 1730-40 One of cruciform type, the tall tapering neck with an applied collar or string rim, 22cm high, the others of octofoil form moulded with four pairs of deep vertical flutes dividing alternating broad and narrow panels, with tall tapering necks, one with a plain collar or string rim, 30cm high, the other of quarter size with a collar consisting of four trailed rings, with a deep basal 'kick-up', 20cm high (3) Footnotes: Provenance With Brian Watson, April 2013 (smallest) Graham Slater Collection Similar serving bottles are illustrated by Andy McConnell, The Decanter: Ancient to Modern (2018), p.65. The form of these bottles would have maximised the surface area to facilitate chilling of the contents prior to consumption. That they were not apparently stoppered may suggest that they were used for sparkling wines or cider.
