WOLF KAHN (American/German, 1927-2020) Receding Woods (Burnt Sienna) signed 'W. Kahn' (lower left); identified and dated to 2004 on labels from Doyle's, New York, and Ameringer Yohe Fine Art, New York (affixed to the backing) pastel on paper sheet size 9 x 10 in. (22.9 x 25.4 cm) framed 20 1/2 x 23 1/4 x 3/4 in. (52.1 x 59.1 x 1.9 cm) Footnotes: This work will be included in the Wolf Kahn Foundation's Catalogue Raisonné Project of the artist's work and is accompanied by a letter of acceptance issued by the Wolf Kahn Foundation. Provenance Ameringer Yohe Fine Art, New York. Sale, Doyle, New York, June 25, 2014, lot 60. Sale, Provincetown Art Association and Museum, September 21, 2024. The present private Massachusetts collection. N.B. Wolf Kahn was born in Stuttgart, Germany, to a Jewish family. His father was a well-known musician and composer with the Stuttgart Philharmonic Orchestra until 1933, when he was forced out by Hitler's regime. At around this time the Kahns fled Germany; Wolf's siblings and parents went to the United States while he was sent to live with his grandmother in Frankfurt. Wolf finally reunited with his family in New York in 1940. Over the following decades, Wolf took art classes in and around New York City, including with New School's Stuart Davis and Abstract Expressionist Hans Hofmann. He completed a bachelor's degree at the University of Chicago in 1950 and eventually settled down with his wife, Emily Mason, in Brattleboro, Vermont. Kahn's early work was more monochromatic than his later work. When he moved to Vermont he developed a new focus on the foggy, atmospheric New England landscape and Maine coastline. Kahn's landscapes apply an evocative, vibrant blend of Realism, Impressionism, and Color Field painting. His works demonstrate the influence of the variety of artist with whom he worked throughout his career, including impressionists, modernists, and abstract artists, to create a style wholly unique and identifiable as his. Wolf Kahn's work is held in many large collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the National Gallery of Art, the Whitney Museum of Art, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
