MARY CORITA (SISTER CORITA) KENT (American, 1918-1986) Rainbow Swash (Maquette for the Boston Gas Tank) signed 'Corita' (incised lower right of the Boston Gas label); stamped '©Boston Gas Company 1971' (below signature) acrylic and paper on plaster 2 1/4 x 2 3/4 in. (5.7 x 7.0 cm) Footnotes: N.B. Corita Kent was a nun, educator, designer, and artist born in Fort Dodge, Iowa. She joined the Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary at age 18 and took the name Sister Mary Corita. After graduating from Immaculate Heart College in Los Angeles and earning her master's degree at the University of Southern California in 1951, Kent took a job leading the art department at Immaculate Heart College. Much of Kent's work during this period was serigraphic, a medium in which she was self-taught; this choice of medium was partially an effort to make art more democratic, accessible, and affordable. Kent was an innovative and progressive teacher, and was closely involved in many activist movements including the anti-Vietnam War movement and the Civil and Women's Rights movements. In the 1960s Kent moved to Boston, where she began a particularly prolific period of creation. The present work is based on one of Kent's most iconic works: the 1971 Rainbow Swash mural on the LNG storage tank in Dorchester - the largest copyrighted artwork in the world. The current storage tank is a second version of the work after the first was torn down in 1992. Kent also designed the 1985 Love stamp for the USPS. Kent died in Watertown, Massachusetts, in 1986.
