LUDWIG BEMELMANS (American, 1898-1962) The Rug Merchant Was Very Cold executed circa 1956 signed 'Bemelmans' (lower right); titled on a handwritten label (affixed to the reverse); identified on a label from Hammer Galleries (affixed to the frame reverse) casein on carton 15 1/2 x 15 in. (39.4 x 38.1 cm) framed 22 1/2 x 22 x 1 1/2 in. (57.2 x 55.9 x 3.8 cm) Footnotes: Provenance With Hammer Galleries, New York (no. 17276-15). A private New York collection (probably acquired from the previous, 1950s). By descent to the present owner. N.B. Bemelmans's Madeline stories were first published in 1939. The exploits of Madeline were inspired by Bemelmans's own experiences as a rambunctious child in Austria, and the character was influenced by his mother, daughter Barbara, and wife Madeleine. The present illustration comes from Madeline's Christmas, written by Bemelmans in 1956 as a special in McCalls Magazine and published as an independent book in 1985. The story takes place on a freezing, blizzardy Christmas Eve in Paris, and Ms. Clavel and all the Girls of the Old House are snowed in. After supper, Madeline hears a knock on the door. The caller is Mustapha, a rug merchant who comes bearing twelve rugs to warm the cold floors of the boarding school. Ms. Clavel gives Madeline the money for these much-needed rugs and Mustapha helps her roll them out onto the floors before venturing back into the blizzard. Soon, though, he grows cold outside without the warmth of his rugs, and he is forced to turn back to the Old House and seek shelter. Madeline gives Mustapha medicine, a warm bath, and tea. Fortified and grateful, Mustapha reveals himself to be not only a rug merchant but also a magician. With a whispered Abracadabra, the carpets he had brought take flight, carrying the Girls out above the snow-covered roofs of Paris. Each one is brought home to visit her parents for Christmas Eve. Afterward, they are safely delivered back to the Old House, where Ms. Clavel awaits.
