He pursued a major in chemistry and graduated from Nanjing University in 1925. During 1933-1955, he was relocated to London to study Economics and assumed a teaching role in Chinese at the School of Oriental Studies (now known as SOAS). Concurrently, he embarked on the publication of his renowned series of books The Silent Traveler. The book title became his style name and appeared in his seals, such as the square one in relief on the three paintings in the present lot. In 1955, Chiang Yee moved to the United States and taught Chinese at Columbia University. He obtained his US citizenship in 1966, the same year he painted Crane and Eagle in the present lot. According to the inscriptions, both paintings were dedicated to his fraternal nieces. Crane was executed on the summer solstice (June 22) while Eagle on the second day following the Dragon Boat Festival (June 25) in Hong Kong. The second inscription on Eagle is dated 1972, the year when Chiang Yee was invited to deliver lectures as a visiting professor at the Chinese University of Hong Kong and held his solo exhibition. Chiang Yee returned to China in 1975 and spent the remainder of his life in close proximity to his hometown. Lot to be sold without reserve.
