[Gemini X] THE SPACECRAFT IN A RECORD-HIGH ORBIT OVER THE BLUE EARTH John Young, 18-21 July 1966 Printed 1966. Vintage chromogenic print on fibre-based Kodak paper [NASA image S-66-45688]. Numbered 'NASA S-66-45688' in red in the top margin, with NASA caption and 'A Kodak Paper' watermark on the reverse (issued by NASA Manned Spacecraft Centre, Houston, Texas). 20.3 x 25.4 cm. (8 x 10 in.) Historical context Gemini X was the first mission to achieve both a flawless docking and the successful firing of Agena 10's rocket, boosting the spacecraft to a record-breaking apogee of 413 nautical miles. This milestone allowed Collins and Young to view Earth from a higher altitude than any human had ever reached. LIFE Magazine celebrated the achievement in its August 1966 issue under the headline 'Highest photos of Earth taken by man.' Footnotes: This rare view, captured through the spacecraft window with the 70mm Maurer space camera and Kodak Ektachrome SO-217 film (ASA 64), reveals Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula, the Gulf of Mexico, the Caribbean Sea, the Yucatan Channel, and the western end of Cuba.
