[Apollo 15] THE GOLF POSE: James Irwin digging a trench at the Hadley scientific site David Scott, 26 July - 7 August, 1971, EVA 2 Printed 1971. Vintage gelatin silver print on fibre-based paper [NASA image AS15-92-12424]. Numbered 'NASA AS15-92-12424' in black in the top margin (issued by NASA Manned Spacecraft Centre, Houston, Texas). 20.3 x 25.4 cm. (8 x 10 in.) Historical context A Golfer on the Moon. This remarkable frame, part of a panoramic sequence captured by David Scott at a lunar science station, shows James Irwin at work—not with a putter, but with a lunar surface scoop. Here, Irwin digs a trench by forcing the scoop into the ground and propelling the soil backward between his legs. He would later use a device to measure the mechanical properties of the lunar soil. 'He is bending over as far as he is able to in the stiff Apollo suit, which the astronauts often called 'hard suits.' (Reynolds, p. 188) In the background, the towering slopes of Mount Hadley rise, its base approximately 14 kilometres away, providing a dramatic backdrop to the scientific work unfolding on the Moon. Footnotes: Literature Apollo: the epic journey to the Moon, Reynolds, p. 188 Photographing the Final Frontier from Apollo to Hubble, Hope, p. 28 For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com For further information about this lot please visit the lot listing
