[Apollo 10] STUNNING CRATER ON THE MOON'S MYSTERIOUS FARSIDE John Young, Eugene Cernan, or Thomas Stafford, May 18-26, 1969 Printed 1969. Vintage chromogenic print on fibre-based Kodak paper [NASA image AS10-34-5172]. With 'A Kodak Paper' watermark on the reverse (issued by NASA / North American Rockwell, Downey, California). (North American Rockwell was NASA's prime contractor for the Apollo Command and Service Modules). 25.4 x 20.3 cm. (10 x 8 in.) Historical context A stunning telephoto view of the rugged far side lunar terrain near Crater Keeler. Captured with the Hasselblad 500EL and 250mm telephoto lens, this photograph showcases a sharply defined, steep-walled crater approximately 12 miles in diameter (6° S / 158° E), surrounded by a desolate expanse of lunar badlands. Rubble, likely ejecta material, is visible along its outer slopes. Above it, a larger, more subdued crater adds to the dramatic landscape. Apollo 10's extended time in lunar orbit allowed for unprecedented observations, including this detailed image of a previously unphotographed segment of the Moon.
