[Apollo 12] THE ACTIVATED OCEAN OF STORMS SCIENTIFIC SITE Pete Conrad, 14-24 November 1969, EVA 1 Printed 1969. Vintage chromogenic print on fibre-based Kodak paper [NASA image AS12-46-6817]. With 'A Kodak Paper' watermark on the reverse, numbered 'NASA AS12-46-6817' in red in the top margin (issued by NASA Manned Spacecraft Centre, Houston, Texas). 20.3 x 25.4 cm. (8 x 10 in.) Historical context Apollo 12's scientific site is online. Pete Conrad took this photograph just after completing the setup of the Central Station. In the foreground, its antenna is pointed toward Earth, ready to transmit scientific data collected from the deployed instruments. In the background, the magnetometer, one of the key ALSEP experiments, stands ready for operation. Reflecting on the challenges of setting up equipment on the lunar surface, Conrad later remarked: 'We had rough pointing angles in here. This is probably a good example of something designed by somebody that wasn't ever going to see the lunar surface. Apparently, it is aligned all right, because you are receiving good signals.' —Pete Conrad (ALSJ mission transcript, 117:42:57 GET) Footnotes: From the mission transcript when the photograph was taken: 117:42:52 Conrad: Does the antenna look like it's pointed at Earth? 117:42:57 Bean: It looks close.
