[Apollo 11] BUZZ ALDRIN RETRIEVING EQUIPMENT FROM LM EAGLE AT TRANQUILLITY BASE Neil Armstrong, 16-24 July 1969 Printed 1969. Vintage chromogenic print on fibre-based Kodak paper [NASA image AS11-40-5931]. Numbered 'NASA AS11-40-5931' in red in the top margin, with 'A Kodak Paper' watermark on the reverse (issued by NASA Manned Spacecraft Centre, Houston, Texas). 20.3 x 25.4 cm. (8 x 10 in.) Historical context A striking view of the first outpost of human exploration beyond Earth. While Buzz Aldrin retrieved scientific equipment from Eagle, Neil Armstrong stepped back 20 meters southeast of the Lunar Module to capture this rare shot of both an astronaut and the LM in the same frame—part of a 360° panoramic sequence of Tranquillity Base. The TV camera and Solar Wind Collector stand in the right foreground, while the footprints of the first moonwalkers and the 35mm stereo close-up Kodak camera are visible in the foreground. The photograph highlights both the technological feat of landing on the Moon and the personal triumph of the astronauts who dared to venture into the unknown. 'Nothing can replace the pictures that were taken on the first visit to the lunar surface. Those are always going to stand out.' —Buzz Aldrin (Jacobs, p. 15) Footnotes: From the mission transcript when the photograph was taken: 110:57:05 Armstrong: And the panorama is complete. I'm at about the LM 7:30 position (SE) at about 60 feet.
