[Gemini VII] FISHEYE VIEW INSIDE THE CRAMPED FIRST TWO-MAN US SPACECRAFT NASA, December 1965 Printed 1965. Vintage chromogenic print on fibre-based Kodak paper [NASA image S-65-60604]. With 'A Kodak Paper' watermarks on the reverse (issued by NASA / General Dynamics). 20.3 x 25.4 cm. (8 x 10 in.) Historical context A remarkable view showcasing the marvellously engineered Gemini capsule, with its seats, control panels, and open hatches clearly visible. The Gemini capsule was exceptionally compact, providing astronauts even less room than a driver and passenger in a sports car. Unlike their Mercury predecessors, Gemini astronauts had full control of their spacecraft. With orbital manoeuvring rockets, the capsule could be actively 'flown' in orbit—a groundbreaking advancement crucial to completing their ambitious missions. Footnotes: [original NASA caption for the photograph] A fish-eye lens was used to photograph this Gemini flight article's forward displays and controls. The view gives an idea of the tight quarters and work area shared for periods exceeding a week by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) astronauts in the mid-1960's.
