[Apollo 12] THE BURN-OUT TV CAMERA ON THE OCEAN OF STORMS Pete Conrad, 14-24 November 1969, EVA 1 Printed 1969. Vintage chromogenic print on fibre-based Kodak paper [NASA image AS12-46-6755]. With 'A Kodak Paper' watermark on the reverse (issued by NASA / North American Rockwell, Downey, California). (North American Rockwell was NASA's prime contractor for the Apollo Command and Service Modules) 20.3 x 25.4 cm. (8 x 10 in.) Historical context A mission setback frozen in time. This frame from Pete Conrad's 4 O'clock LM Panorama captures the now-lifeless TV camera in the foreground and the Solar Wind Experiment site in the distance. What should have provided live coverage of Apollo 12's lunar activities was lost early in the mission when Alan Bean accidentally pointed the camera at the Sun during transfer from the Lunar Module. With television transmission cut short, the only surviving visual records of their exploration are the stunning Hasselblad photographs taken by the astronauts themselves.
