A DOUBLE SIDED ALBUM PAGE WITH PAINTINGS OF A MOONLIT TRYST AND OF LAYLA AND MAJNUN NORTH INDIA, LATE MUGHAL, 18TH CENTURY Opaque watercolor and gold on paper; the paintings mounted to either side of an album folio with gold floral borders. Image: 11 x 7 1/2 in. (27.9 by 19.1 cm); Folio: 13 1/2 x 10 in. (34.3 by 25.4 cm) Footnotes: Provenance Private Collection, Virginia The delicate paintings on either side of this album page depict lovers in verdant landscapes. On the recto, a royal couple, possibly Baz Bahadur and Rupmati, are nestled on a rock platform in a midnight tryst. An attendant waits with their horses below as the forlorn maiden lays with her head in her lover's lap, suggesting that the couple will soon part. On the reverse, Layla has found Majnun in a desperate state. Although emaciated, his disposition seems lifted by the presence of Layla and they gesticulate over an open book. Below the couple, the ever-present companion of Majnun, the lion, roars and Layla's camel remains alert by a small lake. Compare with a scene of Baz Bahadur and Rupmati riding at night, by Faqirullah, Lucknow, c. 1770, in the Victoria & Albert Museum, London (IS.8-1957). Also compare a Delhi school example from the same period, Ehnbom, Indian Miniatures: The Ehrenfeld Collection, 1985, no. 30, pp. 76-7.
