AN ILLUSTRATION FROM A RAGAMALA SERIES: DHANASHRI RAGINI BUNDELKHAND, PERHAPS DATIA, CIRCA 1660 Opaque watercolor heightened with gold on paper; recto with two lines of devanagari identifying the subject 'dhanashri' and numbered '20' in the text field above. Folio: 8 x 5 3/4 in. (20.3 x 14.6 cm) Footnotes: Provenance A Distinguished Private European Collection Acquired in February 1987 Among the evocative modes of the Ragamala tradition, Dhanasri Ragini has the emotion of longing for one's absent beloved; the painful feeling is one of the central emotions explored in Indic poetry and music. This painting personifies the melancholic melody as a heroine sketching her absent lover's portrait at night. A painting from the same series, with corresponding two lines of text above and arabesque border below, was offered at Christie's, New York, 28 March 2024, lot 80. Another closely related painting from an Amarusataka series was sold at Sotheby's, New York, 17 March 2015, lot 1121. Five pages from a further related series, c. 1652, are published in Seitz, Orchha, Datia, Panna, 2015, nos. 32.1-32.5, where the author reattributes the painting school from Malwa to Datia. Buyers' Premium and Charges
For all Sales categories excluding Arms & Armour, Coins and Medals, Motor Cars, Motorcycles, Wine & Whisky
28% on the first $50,000 of the hammer price;
27% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of $50,000 up to and including $1,000,000;
21% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of $1,000,000 up to and including $6,000,000;
and 14.5% of the hammer price of any amounts in excess of $6,000,000.

Oversized Lots
