Publisher's grey-blue french fold wrappers, minor toning to spine and outer margins of covers. WITH: Autograph Letter Signed ('Edward J. O'Brien') to Edward Titus of the Black Manikin Press, on copies of Three Stories... and thanking him for the Memoirs (certainly Titus's 1930 edition of Kiki of Montparnasse, for which Hemingway wrote an introduction), 1 p, 12mo, Oxford, March 1, 1931. Provenance: Ernest Hemingway (inscribed to Edward J. O'Brien); sold Sotheby's, London, December 6, 1984. FINE ASSOCIATION COPY OF HEMINGWAY'S FIRST BOOK, INSCRIBED TO EDITOR EDWARD J. O'BRIEN BENEATH THE DEDICATION TO HADLEY, 'And this one is for Edward J. O'Brien from Ernest Hemingway.' Upon publication, O'Brien had given Hemingway a major boost in selecting 'My Old Man' for his Best Short Stories 1923, going so far as to dedicate the entire annual volume to Hemingway (albeit misspelling his name in the dedication, 'Hemenway'). Hemingway wrote to O'Brien when informed of his selection, 'And to show you how much I appreciate it I will make a very solemn vow to you and God never to think about any readers but you and God when writing stories all the rest of my life' (Selected Letters, ed. Carlos Baker, p. 103). Despite O'Brien's dedication slip, Hemingway remained indebted to O'Brien for his support of the young and unknown author, writing to Maxwell Perkins in 1927, that O'Brien had 'done more for my liturary careeah than anyone except yourself and Ellery Sedgwick who seems something like Santa Claus in the days when we believed in Santa Claus' (to Maxwell Perkins, August 31, 1927). Six of the poems had appeared in Harriet Monroe's Poetry magazine, but this is the first appearance in print of his prize story 'My Old Man,' as well as 'Up in Michigan' and 'Out of Season,' plus four poems. AN IMPORTANT ASSOCIATION COPY FOR THE EDITOR WHO HELPED MAKE HIM. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com For further information about this lot please visit the lot listing
