PRESENTATION COPY OF JOYCE'S FIRST PUBLISHED BOOK. JOYCE, JAMES. 1882-1941. Chamber Music. London: Elkin Mathews, [1907]. 12mo. Publisher's green cloth stamped in gilt, custom red cloth chemise and slipcase with morocco spine label. Slightly rubbed, minor bumps to corners, browning to endpapers, a few stray pencil marks. Provenance: Theodore Spicer-Simson (sculptor, 1871-1959; inscription); William Van R. Whitall (1869-1945; booklabel); Jonathan Goodwin (his sale, Sotheby's Parke Bernet, New York, 25 October 1977, lot 440), to current owner. FIRST EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY, OF JOYCE'S FIRST PUBLISHED BOOK, inscribed on the front free endpaper 'To Theodore Spicer-Simson / James Joyce / Paris / 25. ix. 1922.' Limited issue, one of 509 copies, of Joyce's first published book. This represents the third binding variant, with thin wove endpapers, and the poems in signature C poorly centered. Joyce never received royalties for this collection of poems written in his early youth. Theodore Spicer-Simson was a sculptor and medalist who had known Joyce since 1903. In 1922, he produced a bronze medallion of Joyce's portrait in profile as part of his series Men Of Letters Of The British Isles, which also included G.K. Chesterton, Thomas Hardy, George Bernard Shaw, H.G. Wells, and W.B. Yeats, among others. A WONDERFUL ASSOCIATION. Slocum & Cahoon A3. Buyers' Premium and Charges

27% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of $50,000 up to and including $1,000,000;

A 3rd-party bidding platform fee (the "3rd-party bidding platform fee") equal to 4% of THE BID PRICE shall be payable by buyers whose successful bid is submitted via 3rd-party bidding platforms, including Invaluable; Live Auctioneers; The Saleroom; Lot-tissimo.
