SHAKER MANUSCRIPT TRANSMISSIONS. 19th-Century Shaker manuscript of inspired writings, containing transmissions from Isaac Newton, George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, Napoleon, John Bunyan, etc., c. 220 pp, 8vo (188 x 160 mm), beginning on p [3], the second leaf of an introduction signed 'Geo Wragg Watkins, South Union, Kentucky, June 3rd, 1854,' final dated entry November 8, 1855, the first 130 pp apparently in his hand mostly transmissions (noted 'received') from historical figures (as well as through June 16, 1854, 19 pp of his own writings (noted 'composed' rather than 'received') through June 20, 1854, the final 62 pp in multiple hands (both 'received' and 'composed') running through October 29, 1854, with the last dated entry immediately following November 8, 1855, contemporary calf-backed boards, disbound, some page edges chipped particularly at front and rear. Provenance: George Wragg Watkins (signed introduction); given to 'Mr. Heartt' (provenance description to rear endpaper); presentation inscription to 'Dear Susie.' AN INTERESTING SHAKER MANUSCRIPT OF INSPIRED WRITINGS, featuring many noted contributors including Isaac Newton, George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, Napoleon, John Bunyan, as mentioned above as well as Edgar Allen Poe, Lord Byron, Patrick Henry, John Rousseau, William Cowper, War Eagle, William Wirt, as well as from unknown spirits, 'An Angel of Heaven,' and previous generations of Shakers, including Mother Ann. Following on the divine manifestations of Mother Ann Lee, Shakers, particularly from about 1837 through the 1850s witnessed the phenomenon of manifestations, '... wonderful and almost incredible openings of light and truth pertaining to this and the external spiritual world ... proof of a telegraphic communication established between the two worlds' (Evans, Shakers Compendium...., Introduction, 1859). These manifestations included these inspired writings, as well as 'gift drawings,' and the more ephemeral forms of songs and dance. The present copy is a particularly interesting example of the communication between worlds and the important 'distinguished souls' that might visit a Shaker.
