English School, 17th Century Portrait of a gentleman, traditionally identified as Edward Monins of Waldershawe, bust-length, in black costume oil on canvas 80.3 x 64.5cm (31 5/8 x 25 3/8in). together with an English School, 17th Century Portrait of a gentleman, purported to be a member of the Monins family (according to a label on reverse) and possibly Captain Thomas Monins, wearing a breastplate, oil on canvas, 73 x 64.3cm (2) the larger, framed: 104 x 88cm Footnotes: Provenance The sitter and thence by descent to the present owner Sir Edward Monins, 2nd Baronet of Waldershawe, was the elder son of Sir William Monins, 1st Baronet of Waldershare (who died in 1643) and Jane Twisden, the daughter of Roger Twisden of Roydon Hall, Kent. He married Elizabeth Style, daughter of Sir Thomas Style of Wateringbury, and died in 1663. Captain Thomas Monins received a commission from Oliver Cromwell, although his subsequent behaviour suggested that he was a Royalist at heart. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: * * VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium. Buyers' Premium and Charges


For all Sales categories, buyer's premium excluding Cars, Motorbikes, Wine, Whisky and Coin & Medal sales, will be as follows:

Buyer's Premium Rates
28% on the first £40,000 of the hammer price;
27% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £40,000 up to and including £800,000;
21% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £800,000 up to and including £4,500,000;
and 14.5% of the hammer price of any amounts in excess of £4,500,000.

A 3rd party bidding platform fee of 4% of the Hammer Price for Buyers using the following bidding platforms will be added to the invoices of successful Buyers for auctions starting on or after 6th July 2024 – Invaluable; Live Auctioneers; The Saleroom; Lot-tissimo.

VAT at the current rate of 20% will be added to the Buyer's Premium and charges excluding Artists Resale Right.
