II, p.582, cat.no. 1307a (as 'untraced') The present portrait is a reduced version of the three-quarter-length portrait of Townshend in the collection of the Fine Art Museums of San Francisco. George Townshend (1724-1807) was the eldest son of Charles, 3rd Viscount Townshend of Raynham, Norfolk and following an education at Eton and Cambridge, entered the army in 1743; he was also MP for Norfolk from 1747 to 1764 when he succeeded his father as 4th Viscount. He was promoted to General in 1782 and as well as having a distinguished military career he achieved some renown as a political caricaturist.
