Elena Karusaar (born 1946) Three photographs for Parajanov's film Ashik-Kerib gelatin silver print various sizes Footnotes: Provenance Fotoatelier Gallery The film Ashik-Kerib, directed by Sergo Parajanov and Dodo Abashidze, was shot in 1988 and produced by the Georgian Film Studio. It is based on Mikhail Lermontov's work of the same name and is dedicated to Parajanov's close friend Andrei Tarkovsky, who had passed away two years earlier. Ashik-Kerib is Parajanov's final completed film, centred around a poignant love story. During the filming process, photographers Yuri Mechitov and Elena Karusaar accompanied Parajanov, capturing key moments of production and creating striking portraits of the characters. Elena Karusaar was born in 1946 in Leningrad. She graduated in 1969 from the Leningrad State Institute of Film Engineering with a degree in sound engineering. The following year, she began working at Lenfilm as an assistant sound engineer on Gleb Panfilov's film The Beginning. By 1975, she had transitioned into photography for Lenfilm productions, becoming a full-time feature photographer in 1977. Her collaborations with notable directors such as Ilya Averbakh, Dinara Asanova, and Dmitri Dolin played a significant role in shaping her distinctive artistic style. Karusaar became a highly respected professional, known for capturing psycho-portraits of characters that revealed their inner essence, often serving as visual references for casting decisions. Karusaar's collaboration with the Georgian Film Studio was particularly notable. In 1987, she worked on the production of Ashik-Kerib, which premiered in 1988. At first glance, her images may appear to be typical behind-the-scenes shots, depicting the director, camera crew, and actors. However, upon closer inspection, they reveal a vivid narrative of the creative process itself. Her photographs document every detail of the production, from props and ornaments to costumes, makeup, and jewellery.
