An 18 carat gold trefid spoon and fork stamped with London Assay Office mark, and marks for London 1987, they both have had marks to the backs of the stems obliterated, they were submitted to The Goldsmiths' Hallmark Authentication Committee (GHAC), formerly The Antique Plate Committee (APC), as part of The Peter Ashley-Russell fakes and forgeries case in 1986 With rat-tail bowl and three-pronged fork, each engraved with scrolling acanthus foliage incorporating a mask below vacant oval cartouches, length of spoon 18.6cm and fork 17.2cm, weight 142.6gms. (2) Footnotes: This gold spoon and fork was originally sold in July 1985 purporting to be seventeenth century. They bore marks pertaining to be that of William Mathew, London 1689. In 1986 the Antique Plate Committee, the London Assay Office and the Metropolitan Police coordinated an investigation that led to the arrest of Mr Peter Ashley-Russell for fakes and forgeries. Several other pieces of flatware were also proven to be of his manufacture. The Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths played an active role in authenticating confiscated exhibits and provided expert evidence. Ashley-Russell was imprisoned for 21 months. Another case in 2008 saw Ashley-Russell being further imprisoned for offences under the Forgery Act. There was a high quality of the workmanship in the manufactured punches leading to particularly authentic looking hallmarks on the forged articles. Prior to this the most notable prosecution was the infamous Lyon and Twinam case, whereby Reuben Lyon and Charles Twinam were found guilty of forging silver in the 1890's. This gold spoon and fork were submitted to the London Assay office and cancelled the forged hallmarks and then marked the spoon and fork as new items. They were subsequently then returned to Ashley-Russell.
