Yinglong Yi A Fine silver and enamel 'Golden Dawn' vessel Birmingham 2024 Of cylindrical tapering form, the body constructed on thin silver wires, with a vibrant primarily orange, but multi-coloured plique-à-jour enamelling suspended in-between the wiring, giving the effect of stained glass, raised on a collet foot, height 8cm. Footnotes: The present work forms part of the I-PAJ series of which an example is held within the permeant collection of the V&A. The series is a demonstration of the interplay of light, colour and shape, created by bringing together refine plique-à-jour technique with beautiful design. The objects are produced in a way similar to cloisonne enamel, where segmented patterns are arranged in a mould using fine, thin silver wires which is to be filled with enamel after the mould is removed; the object is then fired within a very short period of time so that the enamel is melted to a desirable consistency that would fill the void of all the segments. Inspiration of this series partly in his obsession with the technique, and partly in the 'Manchurian Window', a traditional architectural feature that combines stained glass, etched glass and local arts in Canton. Yinglong Li was interested in the aesthetics of the Manchurian Window, as well as in its hybridity of western and Chinese crafts, a characteristic deeply rooted in modern Cantonese society and culture. https://collections.vam.ac.uk/item/O1742797/vessel-li-yinglong/ Biography As a craft practitioner and researcher, Yinglong specialises in enamelling and silversmithing. His pieces are primarily created using plique-à-jour, an old and rare enamelling technique. Yinglong has developed his enamel practice over 17 years. His works have been collected by the Victoria and Albert Museum and Durham University. Yinglong Li is a recent PhD graduate of the School of Jewellery, Birmingham City University.
