Cecil Beaton (British, 1904-1980) Margot Fonteyn as Marguerite in Margeurite and Armand, 1963 Half-length, in a costume designed by Beaton, silver-gelatin print, with photographer's ink-stamp credit to reverse, probably printed later 55 x 43cm (21 5/8 x 16 7/8in) Footnotes: Marguerite and Armand is based on the 1848 novel by Alexandre Dumas fils (1924-1895) which was inspired by Dumas' relationship with Marie Duplessis. Beaton worked on at least two adaptations of this novel as a ballet, the first being in 1946 under the American title Camille (see lot 10). This production was choreographed by Frederick Ashton in 1963 specifically for Margot Fonteyn and Rudolph Nureyev in the principal roles and whose names are now synonymous with this ballet.
