Footnotes: Provenance The collection of Rudolf Nureyev. Sometime after to the present private collection. N.B. According to the presentation plaque, the present work was once in the collection of Rudolf Nureyev (1938-1993), one of the greatest ballet dancers of all time. Nureyev was born in Russia, studying ballet in Leningrad under Alexander Ivanovich Pushkin before joining the Mariinsky Ballet at age 20 and almost immediately rising to the level of principal dancer. When he traveled to Paris to dance in 1960, his reputation as a dancer became international. Nureyev during this period was under close observation by the KGB for his alleged involvement with foreigners in Paris. Increasingly suspicious of his company's attempts to convince him to return to Moscow, Nureyev chose to defect and stay in Paris. This marked the first defection of a Soviet artist during the Cold War. Over the rest of Nureyev's career he worked with many companies, including the Grand Ballet du Marquis de Cuevas, the Royal Ballet, the Paris Opera Ballet, the National Ballet of Canada, and the American Ballet Theatre. He performed in the U.S., Canada, Australia, France, England, Austria, and even back in Leningrad. He became director of the Paris Opera Ballet in 1983 and passed away from AIDS complications in 1993.
