Antoine Monnoyer (French, 1670-1747) Still Life with Tulips, Honeysuckle, and Other Flowers in a Vase on a Ledge circa 1730-40 signed 'JBaptiste' (lower right) oil on canvas 45.5 x 57.0 cm (17 15/16 x 22 7/16 in). framed 60.5 x 73.0 x 5.5 cm (23 13/16 x 28 3/4 x 2 3/16 in). Footnotes: Provenance Sale, Sotheby's, Old Master and British Paintings, December 8, 2011, lot 251, as Jean-Baptiste Monnoyer. The present private collection (probably acquired from the previous). N.B. The present work is characteristic of the work Antoine Monnoyer, the son of Jean-Baptiste Monnoyer. It can notably be compared to a series of six still lifes that he painted for the dining room of the king's apartment at the Royal Castle in Stockholm between 1733 and 1734, particularly two door tops both depicting flower vases, fruit, and parrots (Stockholm, Nationalmuseum, Inv. NM796 and Inv. NM795), whose provenance and history have been thoroughly described by Bön-Jullander (I. BÖN-JULLANDER, 'Antoine Monnoyer', Konsthistorisk Tidsskrift, t. XLII, 1973, p. 84). A few other paintings share similar features, such as the Vase with flowers (C. SALVI, 'Antoine Monnoyer', Pittori di natura morta a Roma, artisti stranieri, G., U. Bocchi ed., 2005, p. 446, fig. A.M. 3) and the Flower vase on a marble entablature, with fruit basket, egret and parrot, signed and dated at 1734 (C. SALVI, D'Après nature. La nature morte en France au XVIIe siècle, 2000, p. 209). In the present painting, the deployment of the mass of flowers on a single plane, reminiscent of a rich tapestry, contrasts with the care given to the volume of each singular element. It is also a tactful homage to the Flemish masters of flower painting of the early 17th century, such as Ambrosius Bosschaert (1573-1621), Jan Brueghel the Elder (1568-1625), and Balthasar van der Ast (1593-1657). The carnation and its meticulously scalloped silhouette, the double anemone and its every petal delicately standing out, the tulips and their glazed, almost starched texture and lastly the wild cherry and honeysuckle flowers overhanging the edge of the entablature – the master's true signature – are all typical of his repertoire. The 'JBaptiste' signature is typical, and may either denote 'Jeune Baptiste' or Antoine's father's name, Jean-Baptiste Monnoyer, with which he was known to sign his works (on this matter, see C. SALVI, supra). We are grateful to Dr. Claudia Salvi for confirming the attribution to Antoine Monnoyer on the basis of digital images and for her kind assistance in cataloguing the present work. A certificate by Dr. Salvi will accompany the lot. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com For further information about this lot please visit the lot listing
