First series, comprising 3 pamphlets in one volume. 8vo (123 x 76 mm). General title dated 1837, table of contents, and 4-page preface dated 1837; individual title-pages and index leaves for each pamphlet (without half-titles to each pamphlet). Contemporary half calf, marbled boards, some wear, some light chipping to general title, overall browning and spotting. Provenance: Jörgen (gift inscription dated November 13, 1837); 'KL' (small printed slip pasted to general title-page); Aagi Skigaard (signature in ink dated 1919). THE INCEPTION OF THE MODERN FAIRY TALE: FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUES OF THE FIRST THREE FAIRY TALE PAMPHLETS WITH ALL TITLE PAGES AND INDICES, including the first appearances of 'The Little Mermaid,' 'The Emperor's New Clothes,' 'The Princess and the Pea,' and 'Thumbelina,' among the nine tales here published for the first time. According to Hersholt, 'no copy with all the title pages and tables of contents has ever been offered for sale by any dealer or at any auction sale' (p 25). On New Year's Day in 1835, Andersen wrote his friend Henriette Hanck: 'I am not starting several 'Children's Tales,' and you must know that I shall try to conquer future generations' (Hersholt, p 24); the first pamphlet appeared in May of that year. The second pamphlet was published on Dec. 16, 1835, and the third was published on April 7, 1837. It is believed that only about 200 copies were printed.
