RAPHAEL SOYER (American, 1899-1987) Reclining Woman signed 'RAPHAEL/SOYER' (lower left) watercolor and charcoal on paper 13 7/8 x 16 7/8 in. (35.3 x 42.9 cm) matted, unframed Footnotes: Provenance Butterfield & Butterfield, San Francisco, December 12, 1996, lot 3099. A private collection (acquired from the previous). Sotheby's New York, American Art, October 2, 2018, lot 137. A private collection, Massachusetts. N.B. Raphael Soyer (born Raphael Schoar) was born in Russia to a Hebrew scholar father and an embroiderer mother. The Soyers emigrated to the United States in 1912 and settled in the Bronx, New York. Soyer began his artistic training soon after. Over his career, his style remained wonderfully fluid in response to his environment, influences, and reaction to social and political events. While at the Art Students League of New York in the 1920s, Soyer's work aligned most with the Ashcan School in its depictions of gritty urban subjects and everyday life. Later, he would adopt a focus on figural depictions, such as nudes, portraits, self portraits, and New York cityscapes, that would persist throughout his career. In the 1930s, Soyer's awareness of the hardships of the Great Depression is reflected in his new embrace of Social Realism. His realism was particularly influenced by Thomas Eakins. Raphael Soyer's work is held in numerous large museum collections including the National Gallery of Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Whitney Museum of American Art. OVERALL CONDITION: The sheet is hinged to the backing in three places near the upper edge on the reverse. There is a tear with creasing and there are small losses to the left edge near the upper left corner. Two tears with creases lie near center right. The upper right corner has a dog-ear crease and there are other creases scattered throughout. There is rippling, toning, and mat burn to the sheet. On the reverse is a tape remnant near the center of the lower edge, and adhesive residue is visible in several places near the edges on the reverse. Two large losses in the upper right quadrant and in the upper left edge. This condition report is provided for your convenience based on the opinion of our cataloguers. It is not a comprehensive condition report and if you require more detailed information, please contact us. Lots are sold on an 'as is' basis, with all faults and imperfections. Lot to be sold without reserve. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com For further information about this lot please visit the lot listing
