Estimate: € 80.000 - 120.000
The stylistic origin of Yongle gilt bronzes can be traced back to the Yuan dynasty, when the court espoused Vajrayâna Buddhism, the Tibetan form of Buddhism, at the end of the 13th century, when Qubilaï khan, the first Yuan emperor, gave a Tibetan lama of the Sakyapa tradition the spiritual authority over the whole empire.
Buddhism appeared in Tibet at the end of the 7th century, but its present form comes essentially from the second propagation of Buddhism in Tibet, during the 10th century, with the emergence of different teachings and traditions.
In Varjayâna Buddhism, Vajrapani can be considered as a manifestation of Akshobya, the head of the Vajra lineage, and one of the five main Buddhas. His main attribute is the vajra, which means in Sanskrit both thunderbolt (irresistible force) and diamond (indestructibility).
