Our Lady with the Child Jesus, Saint Helena, Saint John the Baptist as a child, donor and fluttering angels crowning Our Lady, oil on canvas, Portuguese school, 16th C., relined, restoration, minor faults on the pictorial layer, Dim. - 237 x 144 cm
Notes: This painting is, most probably, a work by the painter Francisco Venegas (1525-1594).
Francisco Venegas was born in Seville, around 1525.
His first trade was goldsmithing, later becoming a painter under the teaching of Luís de Vargas. This learning, and his stay in Rome, resulted in the Mannerist inspiration of his work and the detail of his drawings.
Based in Lisbon, it is known that he was painting here in 1578, having become the royal painter of Philip I of Portugal (II of Spain) in 1583.
Also in 1582, together with Domingos da Costa and Diogo Teixeira, he directed the tempera decoration on the body of the Church in the Hospital of All Saints, destroyed by the fire of 1601.
Some of his works survive to this day: this is the case with four of the eight paintings that make up the Altarpiece of the Church of Luz, in Carnide, all signed, including the central canvas dedicated to the “Apparition of Our Lady of Luz”. The remaining four canvases that are part of the altarpiece are by Diogo Teixeira, a painter with whom he collaborated. Two other works by him, of greater importance, that we can still contemplate are the painting “Saint Mary Magdalene” in the Church of Graça, and the ceiling of the Church of São Roque, both in Lisbon.
Regarding the ceiling of the church of São Roque, it is believed that the Author was represented, peeping
through one of the vaults, in trompe-l'œil. In this probable self-portrait, he appears with an appearance and clothing very similar to the character that appears in the lower right corner of the work now up for auction, thus reinforcing the possibility that Francisco Venegas was the author of this painting.
The round canvas “The Holy Trinity”, also by him, is part of the collection of the National Museum of Ancient Art, with inventory no 20364 TC.
It is known that he designed, although it was not completed, the main altarpiece for the Monastery of São Vicente de Fora with the painting “Saint Irene healing the wounds of Saint Sebastian”.
He died in 1594, in Lisbon, with many honours.
