A Fragment of a Painted Wooden Ceiling
H. max. 23.5 cm. Wood, encaustic painting.
Egypt, 3rd cent. A.D.
Female head in a tondo framed in varying shades of brown, viewed almost en face, the eyes gazing into the distance. Dark brown or black curls of frizzy hair around the forehead, temples and cheeks. Diadem with round centrepiece amid the curls on the crown; on the left ear a large hoop with ball-shaped pendant. Face primed almost white, but with a pink tinge on the cheeks; large eyes with dark lids and dark brown irises under long, finely drawn eyebrows; nose outlined in a dark colour. Bright red lips outlined in a darker shade. Short necklace of dark brown beads around the neck. Reverse smooth. The wooden tenons in the panel and two further mortises speak for the use of this work in a ceiling.
Provenance: Coll. A. and E. Offermann, Cologne (1965-2012). - Formerly priv. coll. in the Rhineland, Auktionshaus Plückbaum, Bonn, ca. 2009.
In size and composition almost identical, and in stylistic detail closely related, to the fragment of a painted ceiling in the Nicholson Museum, Sydney, inv. no. 79.01, see Cat. Frankfurt a. M. – 1999, 258 no. 163 with illus. Panels such as these were used to line the ceilings of rock-cut tombs, as evidenced by such a tomb in the Chargeh Oasis dating from the 2nd–3rd cent. A.D. Whether the figure portrayed is a personification or a portrait it is impossible to say with any certainty.
