Java, North coast, rare batik belanda fragment, badan of a sarung, depicting several episodes of the fairy tale Cinderella against a netting background with birds, flower sprays and butterflies. The present item has been kept in the family for five generations and although the sarung has no kepala and border and some small parts are missing this depiction has a unique character, for which it undoubtably was preserved by the family. Unlike the usual fairy tale depictions found on batik belanda between 1850 and 1900, not a single episode has been used and repeated but the tale has been depicted full story. Carolina von Franquemont (1817-1867) was the first batik manufacturer to adopt scenes from illustrated fairy tale books (Veldhuisen 1993: 40-41) and that was copied by her colleagues. Regarding the history of this textile that manufacturing date could well be close to 1880, the year A. van den Berg in Pekalongan signed a sarong with this fairy in a same fashion, though different in design (Wereld Museum, Rotterdam: WM-60790). ca. 141 x 73 cm. Provenance: Habel Kuhuwael 1850-1913, a regent in Kaibobo, West Seram. His son Carel Christoffel Kuhuwael, regent in the latter part till ca. 1913. Inherited by his daughter through to her granddaughter, Rosia Kuhuwael. [1]
