Pair of George III Giltwood Open Armchairs
After a design by James Wyatt, circa 1785
Each cartouche-shaped padded backrest within a ribbon carved molded frame, above a bowfronted overupholstered seat flanked by padded arm rests carved with leaves at the juncture of the stiles, downswept supports with acanthus carving and long leaves, raised on stop fluted legs.
Literature:
J.Cornforth and J.Fowler, English Decoration in the 18th Century, p. 29, fig. 13
L. Boynton, Gillow Furniture Designs 1760 - 1800, fig. 267, p. 176
The form of these chairs relates to a pattern from the 1770s created by the architect James Wyatt and shown in a room elevation, see J. Cornforth and J. Fowler, English Decoration in the 18th Century, p. 29, fig. 13. A design for a shield-back 'Cabriole' armchair from the Gillows Estimate Sketch Books features a similar leaf-carved frame. Dated October 10, 1786, it was commissioned by Robert Peel, Esq., and the leaf carving was by H. Gibson. A set of four identical giltwood armchairs is illustrated, Devenish and Company, New York, handbook, n. d., p. 40. Two related pairs of armchairs, with more elaborate frames and possibly commissioned for Goodwood House, Sussex and sold from Gordon Castle, West Lothian, Scotland, 1938, were sold, Sotheby's, New York, April 19-20, 2001, lots 532-533 ($22,600 and $26,050, respectively). A related suite of seating furniture, comprising a pair of painted armchairs and a settee, from the collection of The Right Rev. John Wordsworth, Bishop of Salisbury, The Bishop's Palace, Salisbury, Wiltshire, and by descent in 1911 to his wife Mary Anne Frances Wordsworth, was sold, Christie's, London, November 18, 2010, lot 160 (£32,450).
