George III Mahogany Lady's Writing Table
In the manner of Thomas Chippendale or John Cobb, circa 1770
The galleried serpentine top with sliding fire screen panel at the back, above a leather lined writing slide and a dummy drawer, the right side fitted with a mahogany lined drawer compartmentalized for inkwells and pens, raised on cabriole legs joined by a concave fronted platform stretcher. Height 28 5/8 inches (72.8 cm), width 24 3/4 inches (62.9 cm), depth 16 1/2 inches (41.9 cm).
The leading London cabinet making firms of John Cobb and Thomas Chippendale both produced writing tables of this form in the French 'picturesque' fashion, which were probably designed for a lady's dressing room. Thomas Chippendale supplied one such table, veneered in 'tulip' and 'rose' woods, for Nostell Priory, Yorkshire, invoicing it in 1766 as: 'A Lady's commode writing table made of tulip and rosewood with a slider cover'd with green Cloth', the table with similar retractable screen and shaped aprons; see Cristopher Gilbert, The Life and Work of Thomas Chippendale, vol. II, p. 238, fig. 436. A table of the same form is illustrated in Lanto Synge, Mallett Millennium, Suffolk, p. 176, pl. 216
