Während des Deutsch-Französischen Krieges 1870/71 stellte der italienische Revolutionsheld Giuseppe Garibaldi (1807 - 1882) erneut ein italienisches Freiwilligenkorps auf. Er griff damit im Elsass die Deutschen an, um die neue Französische Republik zu unterstützen. Im Oktober 1870 eroberte sein Sohn Ricciotti als Kommandeur der 4. Brigade des Freiwilligenverbandes während der Schlacht von Dijon die Fahne des preußischen Infanterie-Regiments Nr. 61. Diesen Triumph stellt das Gemälde dar, das Ricciottis Ehefrau Constanza (geborene Hopcraft) eigenhändig schuf. Sie hatte mehrere Kinder mit Ricciotti, der als Sohn des italienischen Freiheitshelden Guiseppe Garibaldi und durch eigene militärischen Erfolge Berühmtheit erlangte. Darüber hinaus pflegte Ricciotti zahlreiche Kontakte zu radikalen Demokraten in Europa. So besuchte er z.B. 1871 Karl Marx in London.
