Bulgarian Air Force Honour Badge "Eagle", in bronze, corresponding award documents, one dated 21 Sept. 1941 (in German) - other is original green colour Bulgarian document no. 1218 (in both German and Bulgarian) with embossed "Eagle" on front of the document. Field post letters, documents, all addressed to Vetterich or his family. Carl-Heinz Vettrich was born 22 April 1921 in Ruhland, Germany. He entered service in the Luftwaffe in 1938 and was assigned to VIII. Fliegerkorps (von Richthofen) as an Air Gunner aboard a Junkers 8ID dive bomber. From October 1940 to January 1941.VITI Fliegerkorps took part in the Battle of Britain then transferred to airfields in Romania and Bulgaria. In April of 1941 VII Fliegerkorps was involved in the destruction of the Royal Yugoslav Air Force. On 20 May 20 1941 Operation Mercury, the capture of the island of Crete in the Mediterranean began with VII Fliegerkorps von Richthofen as aerial support. During that time Unteroffizier Vettrich flew many dive bombing sorties over Greece, Epirus and Corinth. In June of 1941 Uffz. Vettrich was transferred to the famous Stuka Geschwader Immelmann 2 on the Eastern Front. Geschwader Immelmann 2 was based in Lepel - Belarus, Russia where they launched their sorties in support of Operation Barbarossa, the invasion of Russia. Carl-Heinz Vettrich was killed in action during a sortie on 14 August 14 1941. He is buried in a soldier's cemetery in Rjelbitzy, Russia and was 20 years old at the time of his death.
