A SCARCE RUSSIAN ICON OF THE CONSOLATION MOTHER OF GOD, 19TH CENTURY. At center within a slightly arched reserve is the Mother of God who holds the right hand of the infant Jesus to her mouth. On the right within an arched reserve is Saint John the Forerunner (Baptist) and on the left the Holy Genadios. The inscription above the head of the Mother of God reads: JOY OR CONSOLATION. It is based on one of the many Wonderworking Mt. Athos icons, in this case from the Vatopedi Monastery and was probably produced there. The inscription above the head of St. Genadios reads: "Holy Genadios: He heard a voice from the icon of the Most Holy Mother of God [saying] 'Do not open the gates of the monastery today.'"This relates to the story that in 807, pirates were going to rob the monastery but while praying near an icon of the mother of God, the abbot heard her speaking to him, telling him not to open the monastery gates but rather to go up on the walls and tell the robbers to go away. In an excellent state of original preservation exhibiting gold shading as is typically found on Mt. Athos painted icons form this period. 13.2 inches x 14.3 inches (33.5 x 36.5 cm).
