A UNIQUE & SCARCE SOVIET PRESENTATION DELEGATE’S PHOTO ALBUM FROM THE RENOWNED 20TH CONGRESS OF THE COMMUNIST PARTY, MOSCOW 1956. The cover of the red leather bound album inset with a hand painted lacquerware plaque depicting Moscow State University, signed lower right in Cyrillic, Rogatov S. P. and inscribed lower left Fedoskino and dated 1955. The end sheet covered in red silk and the interior containing 61 gilt-tipped pages each displaying an approximate 6.25” x 8.75” (16 x 22 cm) black and white photo (and some fold-outs) depicting scenes of the Red Square, The Moscow Kremlin, various personalities at the podium in the central hall including Khrushchev, Bulganin and other delegates. As well as various other scenes from the Congress including candid photos at dinner and social periods as well as a large group photo including (amongst others), Khrushev, Mikoyan, Molotov, Malenkov, Pervukhin, Bulganin and many others, and with gilt spring clasp and black lacquered back cover. It is believed that such albums were presented as gifts to delegates who attended the Congress. Overall 10 inches x 14.25 inches (25.5 x 36 cm).
The 20th Congress of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union was held during 14–25 February 1956. It is best remembered for Nikita Khrushchev's "Secret Speech", which denounced the personality cult and dictatorship of Joseph Stalin.
