A HANDWRITTEN RECORD OF HENRY CLAY’S CLASSIC SENATE SPEECH “IN DEFENSE OF THE AMERICAN SYSTEM”, FEBRUARY 2,3 AND 6, 1832. In 19th century binding with hardboard covers, marbleized paper, leather spine, stamped Clay in gilt. Inscribed “Senate 2nd, 3rd, 6th February 1832” 67 pages total. On last page verso inscribed “Original of … Clay’s speech”. Pages 1-24 are on unruled paper, pages 25-67 are on ruled paper and page 25 has a US Congress blind stamp. 13.5 inches x 8.5 inches.

Henry Clay of Kentucky (1777-1852) was a Senator, Speaker of the House, and Secretary of states. Clay enjoyed a distinguished political career, even though he never attained his greatest desire--the presidency. On February 2, 1832, Clay used the first speech of his Senate career to launch a major attack on the Jackson administration. This three-day speech, entitled "In Defense of the American System”, focused principally on the importance of maintaining protective tariffs. Clay's American System called for higher tariffs to protect American industry, a central bank to control the money supply, and government support for public projects, such as canals, roads, and railroads. This portion of the speech concerns Clay’s tariff policies:

“[Now, eight years after the tariff of 1824], we behold cultivation extended, the arts flourishing, the face of the country improved, our people fully and profitably employed . . . our cities expanded, and whole villages springing up. . . ; our exports and imports increased and increasing; our tonnage, foreign and coastwise, swelling and fully occupied. . . . This transformation of the condition of the country from gloom and distress to brightness and prosperity, has been mainly the work of American legislation, fostering American industry, instead of allowing it to be controlled by foreign legislation.”
