Revington Arthur was born in Glenbrook, Connecticut in 1908. He was an abstract painter, graphic artist, lecturer and art educator. He was the head of the Chautauqua Art Summer School beginning about 1956. He taught painting and drawing sessions as well as gave periodic exhibitions, lectures, and speeches on art. Dr. Karl (Carl) Menninger (the well-known psychiatrist and author of the Human Mind, Man Against Himself and Love Against Hate) was a frequent member at the summer session painting workshops. Numerous well-known NYC artists also visited the Chautauqua sessions as well as those from across the country. Arthur was friends with many of the early modernist teachers as well as many members of the Ash Can School and he himself was a student of Arshile Gorky (1904-1948) whose influence is obvious in his work.
