A FINE RUSSIAN KUSTAR WALL CABINET, AFTER THE DESIGN BY ELENA POLENOVA, ABRAMTSEVO, DATED 1897. Overall with deep chip carving and polychrome decorated in the Neo-Russian style. The upper section with top shelf above a hinged cupboard, the lower with a deep compartment accessed by sliding door and the side with carved post, carved with the date 1897. Original finish. Height 23.1 inches (58 cm), width 20.5 inches (52 cm), depth 10.5 inches (26.5 cm).

Elena Dmitrievna Polenova (1850-1898) was a painter and designer, and sister of the noted painter Vasily Polenov. She studied under Pavel Chistyakov from 1859 to 1870. In 1864, she studied under Ivan Kramskoi in St. Petersburg, and from 1869 to 1870 in the studio of Charles Chaplin in Paris. By the 1870s, Polenova was working primarily in watercolor. Her landscape watercolors were shown first in 1882 in exhibitions in St. Petersburg and Moscow, where they were met with public success and were noticed by the critic Vladimir Stasov. In the early 1880s, Polenova moved to Moscow, where she associated closely with the family of Savva Mamontov and began to play a prominent role in the activities of the Abramstevo circle. In 1885, Polenova and Yelizaveta Mamontova organized a carpentry and wood-carving studio at Abramstevo, which is the likely source of the offered lot. Polenova was closely involved in the development of this national Romantic version of Art Nouveau within Abramstevo circle.
