MAXIMILLIAN, PRINCE OF WIED-NEUWIED (German 1782-1867) “TRAVELS IN THE INTERIOR OF NORTH AMERICA”, 1832-1834. An oblong bound portfolio of 31 engraved “vignette” plates (3 in color) by Karl Bodmer (Swiss, 1809-1893). A companion piece to the atlas volumes of this work with the same title. Bodmer was employed by Prince Maximillian to record his travels amongst the American tribes of the plains during 1833-1834 reaching as far west as Fort McKinsey and the Blackfoot tribe of Montana. Bodmer’s plates depict the scenery, villages, dances and portraits of individuals from various tribes. All plates with a CH. Bodmer embossed blind stamp and each plate bearing titles in German, English and French as well as the names of the series publishers in Coblenz, London and Paris. Hardbound with tissue dividers, cover boards with marbleized paper, leather spine cover and embossed gilt leather title label “Vignette zu prinz Maximillians von Weid Reise Durch Nord-America K.P. Regierung”. Exterior 12 inches x 17.5 inches, pages 11.5 inches x 16 7/8 inches. Impression sizes vary but average 9.5 inches x 10.75 inches.
