AN INTERESTING RUSSIAN ICON OF THE REMOVAL FROM THE CROSS, 18TH CENTURY. In this finely painted icon, clearly based on Western examples, the body of the crucified Christ is shown being removed from the cross. Each participant is identified by the Slavonic inscription depicted in the halo. At top left Nicodemus and at top right Joseph of Arimathea, at center the young man holding the hand and ankle of Christ is identified as St. John the Theologian and at lower left Mary Magdalene and Mary Clopas and at lower right the Mother of God is attended by another Mary. The overall darker palette and use of extensive gold highlighting clearly conveys the great interest and influence that Western art played on traditional iconography. The offered icon would have, in its day, been quite a bit more expense than a traditionally painted icon of the same subject. Taking into consideration the often very high technical quality and craftsmanship such icons as the offered lot exhibit it would seem that the it was the aristocracy, to a great degree, who were the main proponents of what many scholars and theologians consider a corruption of pure or true iconography. Nevertheless, the evidence is clear that such icons, for better or worse were extremely popular. The verso with old inscriptions and painted inventory number. 15.75 inches x 11 inches (40 x 28 cm).
