A GROUP OF FIVE INTERESTING EMBROIDERED PANELS, 16TH OR 17TH CENTURY, PROBABLY ITALIAN OR GERMAN. Likely originating from various ecclesiastical vestments, comprising a large shield shape embroidered panel depicting the Virgin within an oval reserve, rendered in colored silk threads and silver thread, framed in an ornate embroidered surround rendered in silk, silver, and bullion thread on a red velvet ground, and the borders with remnants of tassels. Probably once forming the back of a chasuble or cope, 20.75 inches x 18 inches (52.5 x 45 cm). Together with a circular embroidered panel depicting a Bishop rendered in colored silk thread with silver and bullion highlights. Contained in a bullion fringe-covered circular frame. Diameter 9 inches (23 cm). Together with a diamond shaped embroidered cloth panel depicting a winged cherub head rendered in silk colored silk threads with fleur-de-lis above and below. Height 11.5 inches (29 cm). Together with a possibly chalice veil embroidered with scrolling foliage in bullion and silver threads on a red velvet field with wide bullion embroidered border, 22 inches x 19 inches (55 x 48 cm) and a bullion and silk embroidered fragment, the ends sewn with bullion tassels (unillustrated), 31 inches x 12.5 inches (80 x 31 cm).
