A LARGE AND IMPRESSIVE PAIR OF CHINESE CARVED IVORY EMPRESS AND EMPEROR FIGUREs, CIRCA 1890. Each finely and fully carved in the round from a single tusk of conforming shape depicting an empress with Ruyi scepter and elongated pierced tassel cord and an emperor with ceremonial sword, each with archaistic motifs and fully incised robes with deep folds and overall excellent detailing. The bases with incised seal marks and presumably old retailors typed label “Fine Chinese Carved Ivory Emperor and Empress, Qing Dynasty…” And base of Empress on verso with hand written affixed label inscribed, “Purchased by mom and dad in San Francisco 1920 on their honeymoon” Height 24.5 inches (62.2 cm).
