AN IMPRESSIVE LIFE-SIZE CARVED AND POLYCHROME WOOD FIGURAL GROUPING OF THE MADONNA AND CHILD, ANTON JOSEF REISS (GERMAN 1835-1900). The large and imposing figure sensitively carved in full round, of good proportions and anatomy, deep folds and cascading hair, the Crowned Virgin holds the infant Christ who delivers a blessing with His right hand while his left hand rests on an orb. The fringe of the Virgin’s and Christ's garments inscribed in gilt with Latin text and signed (stamped) on base J.REISS and dated 1868. Height 70 inches (178 cm).

Reiss was born in Dusseldorf in 1835 and was a pupil at the academy there under Julius Bayerle. The work which gave him his first recognition was a Madonna and Child sculpture he produced for the Church of the Assumption in Andernach. He continued a successful career carving church altars and shrines and later branched out into other subjects and mediums such as bronze and stone. Two later major works include a war memorial in Duisburg (1875) and a monument to the 16th century Flemish cartographer Gerhard Kremer Mercator (1878).
