The Virgin Entrhoned with Adoring Angels and Saints - circa 1870

16 inches x 11.25 inches (40 x 28.5 cm)

Andreas Muller was a noted painter of historical and religious scenes as well as a successful graphic designer and restorer. He was the son and pupil of painter and engraver Franz Hubert Müller (1784-1835) who was appointed director of the Darmstadt Gallery by Grand Duke Ludewig I in 1823. Andreas later studied in Munich and in Düsseldorf. On his return from Italy, where he stayed in 1837-42, he worked with, among others, Franz Ittenbach (1813-1879). There he executed a set of frescoes at the church of St. Apollinaris in Remagen. His style is closely related to the Nazarene movement to which he was associated with briefly. From 1856 until 1882 Müller was professor at the Düsseldorf Academy where he enjoyed a successful academic career as well as continuing to accept numerous commissions.
