A VERY FINE DATED RUSSIAN ICON OF THE POKROV MOTHER OF GOD, MOSCOW, 1844. This icon combines two events which are celebrated on October 1st – The Vision of the Holy Fool Andre who saw the Mother of God appear in the air within the Church of the Blachernae in Constantinople (top section) and the Melodist Romanos who could not sing well until the Mother of God appeared to him in a dream, gave him a scroll to eat, and thereby granted him the gift of song. The icon painted in the high style popularized by various workshops in and around Moscow employing mostly Palekh, Mstera or Kholui trained painters. The upper margin identifies the subject as, “An Image of the Pokrov Most Holy Mother of God” The left and right borders are painted with various selected ‘family’ saints. From top to bottom on the left, the Archangel Michael, the Guardian Angel, the Prophet Elijah, and the Venerable Paisius Velichkovsky. On the right border, Saint Anna, the Venerable Pelagia, the Holy Martyr Theodotia and the Holy Martyr Tatiana. The lower right corner inscribed in Slavonic, "The Most Holy Mother of God appeared in a dream and gave him a scroll in his mouth; he swallowed it and became the Singer of Hymns" [literally "singer of kontakia"]. In Russia the "Singer of Kontakia" is what Romanos/Roman the Melodist is called. Further still, on the lower center margin of border is inscribed in Slavonic, "This Holy Icon was painted from the Creation of the World 7352" which translates to the year 1844. Of exceedingly high quality and in an excellent state of preservation. 14 x 12.25 inches (36 x 31cm).
