A LANIER MEADERS GLAZED POTTERY FACE JUG, THIRD QUARTER 2OTH CENTURY. Hand sculpted in the form of a whimsical face with “cocked eyes” and two inset rock teeth. Inscribed “Lanier Meaders” on underside of base. Height 9.5 inches (24 cm).
Lanier Meaders(American 1917-1998) is perhaps one of the most famous folk potters in the United States and can be credited with keeping Southern folk pottery from dying out with his distinctly styled one-of-a kind face jugs.
Lanier’s works are a featured exhibit in the Smithsonian Institute as well as other museums around the country. Lanier received numerous recognitions and awards and along with his mother Arie Meaders, was honored by the Library of Congress with a Meaders Pottery Day in 1978.
